What it usually looks like
Clutch and gearbox faults tend to creep in rather than fail overnight.
Revs rise but speed does not
The clutch is slipping, most obvious in a high gear or pulling a load up a hill. It will not get better on its own.
Judder pulling away
Shuddering as the clutch bites. Often a worn dual mass flywheel rather than the friction plate itself.
Heavy or sinking pedal
A pedal that goes to the floor or feels dead usually points at the master or slave cylinder rather than the clutch.
Crunching into gear
Baulk rings and synchros wearing, most commonly second and third. Sometimes it is just the linkage or a bad clutch release.
Rattle at idle that stops on the pedal
Classic dual mass flywheel wear. Worth catching before it takes the starter ring with it.
Whine that changes with speed
Bearings inside the gearbox. Get it looked at before it turns into a full gearbox replacement.
How we sort it
Confirm the fault first
Judder, slip and crunch all point different ways. We road test and inspect so you are not paying for a clutch when the problem was a slave cylinder.
Clutch and dual mass flywheel
When the box is out, the sensible thing is doing clutch, flywheel and release bearing together. Doing it twice costs far more than doing it once.
Gearbox replacement and sourcing
We source good gearboxes through the trade and fit them. If we are breaking a suitable van, better still, and that saving goes to you.

Is it the clutch or the flywheel?
Often both, and you cannot reliably tell from the driver's seat. Judder and a rattle at idle lean towards the flywheel, slipping leans towards the clutch. We check properly before quoting.
How long will my van be off the road?
A clutch and flywheel is usually a day, sometimes two depending on what we find and parts availability. We will give you a realistic date, not an optimistic one.
Can you fit a used gearbox to save money?
Yes, where a good one is available, and we will be straight with you about the trade-off. A known used box from a low mileage van is often a sensible call on an older Transporter.
